#17 ESU ROLLS TO 23-0 VICTORY IN SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL

May 14, 2009 -- The #17 Hornets put up 23 runs scoring three runs or more in an inning six times during the game with a 23-0 win over #16 Angelo State. ESU racked up 24 hits while holding the rams to only five hits on the day as well as playing error free defense.
Kenny Burkhead drove in the first run of the game as Kevin Wempe doubled and moved to third on an error to start the game. After that the Hornet bats stayed hot, putting up three runs in the third, five in the fourth, three in the fifth and sixth and four in the seventh and eight innings. ESU got four home runs on the day and Hornet hitters managed to draw seven walks. Every Hornet hitter had a hit or a run in the ballgame.
At the plate Kevin Wempe reached base in all seven plate trips going five for five on the day with one home run seven RBI and four runs scored. Kenny Burkhead matched him going five for five with one home run and seven RBI scoring two runs. Conner Crumbliss went four for six with three runs driven in and five runs scored. Anthony Dreiling was two of four with three runs scored two runs. Jacob White and Andy Cotton both went two for five and scored three runs in the game. Cotton also added his second home run of the year. Abe Steinbach added his first home run of the season.
On the mound Colby Killian pitched six scoreless innings allowing only four hits and striking out four. He moved to 6-0 on the season. Austin Anderson and Justing Maxson also pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Hornets.
ESU will return to the field tomorrow when they take on the winner of the Nebraska-Omaha game with Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. from Warrensburg, Mo.

This is the first time a team has scored 23 runs in either the South Central or Central Regional since Delta State did it in 2004.
This marks the first time that a team has won a game by 23 runs since the NCAA starting recording game scored in 1983.
