March 23, 2008 -- The #15 ESU baseball team completed their second straight MIAA sweep with 6-5 and 14-8 wins over Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo on Sunday. The Hornets notched a run in the first inning of all four games in the series. The Hornets knocked off the Griffons 8-3 and 10-7 on Saturday.
In game one the Hornets scored all eight of their runs in the first four innings, but it was enough for the win as Tyler Applehans went all seven innings only allowing eight hits and striking out four. Keith Hernandez went two for three at the plate scoring two runs and driving in two runs for the Hornets.
In game two ESU got four runs in the first and put a five spot up in the seventh inning to pull out a 10-7 win. Brock Nehls picked up the win on the mound for the Hornets going 5.1 innings and striking out three. Aaron Burris earned his second save of the season pitching the final two innings and only allowing one base runner. Kevin Wempe finished two for three with two runs and scored and three RBI. Anthony Dreiling went two for four with two runs scored and drove in a run.
In game three ESU nabbed the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Matt Marasco scored on a Kellen Lane base hit to earn the 6-5 extra inning victory. Daniel Waggoner earned his third win of the season pitching 2.2 innings in relief for the Hornets. Lane finished four of five with two runs scored while Eric Shortell went two of three with two runs driven in.
In game four ESU scored all 14 runs in the first five innings on their way to a 14-8 victory. Aaron Burris picked up the win for ESU pitching 5.0 innings in relief it was his first win of the season. Wempe was three for four with a home run and five RBI while scoring three Hornet runs. Eric Shortell was two for three with three runs scored in the effort.
ESU moves to 22-3 on the season and will next play when they travel to Wichita to take on Newman on March 25 at 6 p.m.
