April 12, 2008 -- The #5 ESU baseball team set a new MIAA record by winning their 28th straight game this season, besting the old record of 27 straight wins set by Central Missouri in 1996. They claimed the feat with 12-1 and 10-2 victories over Missouri Southern. Brian Majors also had hits in both games for the Hornets and extended his team leading hitting streak to 29 games, three shy of the all-time MIAA high of 32.
In game one ESU jumped out early putting up nine runs in the first three innings on their way to a 12-1 victory. Conner Crumbliss went four for five with a home run and two runs driven in. Emporia native Anthony Markowitz also added a home run for the Hornets to go along with two RBI. Eric Shortell was two for five with three RBI in the contest. Tyler Applehans picked up his league leading eighth win with a complete game six hitter.
In game two trailed 1-0 heading into the third inning when they came up with four runs and didn't look back on the way to a 10-2 win. Keith Hernandez was two for four with three runs driven in. Anthony Dreiling added two RBI as well as scoring two runs for the Hornets. Richard Timbrook picked up his fifth win of the season pitching six innings and allowing one run while striking out four.
The Hornets, who are now 35-3 and 21-0 in the MIAA, will close out the series on Sunday, April 12 in Joplin, Mo.
