May 4, 2008 -- The #6 Hornets trailed heading into the bottom of the eighth, but responded with two runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth and added a single run in the 10th for a 6-5 victory. The Hornets outhit the Ichabods 15-9, with seven of their hits coming in the final two innings.
At the plate Eric Shortell tied the MIAA record for home runs in a season hitting his 20th of the season in the eighth inning to drive in Conner Crumbliss. In the bottom of the ninth Nick Wolfe led off the inning with a double, and was pinch run for by Kellen Lane. Lane moved to third on a single by Caleb Williamson. He then scored on a groud ball out by James Morrison. Williamson, who moved to second on the play, then scored on a double by Brian Majors.
The Hornets held the Ichabods scoreless in the top of the tenth inning before coming up in their own half of the frame. The Hornets got two quick outs before Kevin Wempe came to the plate and singled to left field. Pinch hitter Richie Stewart then walked to move Wempe to second. This put a runner in scoring position for a two out, two strike walk-off single by Williamson.
Daniel Waggoner pitched the final 3.0 innings of the game to pick up his sixth win of the season. Richard Timbrook struck out five over the first seven innings for the Hornets. The win sets the new MIAA record for conference wins at 32 breaking the old record of 29 held by Central Missouri.
ESU, 46-7 and 32-4 in the MIAA, will travel to CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City for the MIAA conference tournament. They will face fourth seeded Fort Hays State on Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m.
