#16 ESU BASEBALL SWEEPS COLO. MINES TO OPEN SEASON

February 16, 2008 -- The #16 Hornets swept Colorado School of the Mines 17-7 and 16-7 as they opened their season in Golden, Colo. The Hornets averaged 17 hits in their first two games while hitting three home runs, eight doubles and one triple.

In game one the Hornets trailed 6-4 going into the sixth inning as the bats woke up and ESU tagged the Orediggers for six runs in the seventh inning. Ty Reese (1-0) came in during the fourth inning and gave the Hornets four strong allowing only one run on four hits. Richie Stewart went two for four and drove in four runs to lead the Hornets. Matt Marasco hit his first home run of the season and added three RBI while Andy Anderson added four hits to go along with three RBI. Every person in the Hornet line-up had either a hit or a run scored in the ball game.

In game two ESU jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first three innings and never looked back on their way to a 16-7 win. Ryan Anthony (1-0) picked up his first win of the season pitching the first four innings and only allowing three runs for the Hornets. Eric Shortell was three for three with a triple and six RBI to lead the Hornets. Matt Marasco and Conner Crumbliss each added two RBI to the Hornets tally. Keith Hernandez and Chris Dobler each added home runs for the Hornets in the win.

The Hornets Sunday doubleheader has been cancelled due to snow and cold temperatures in Golden, Colo.
