March 10, 2008 -- The #17 ESU baseball team swept their final day of weekend a 14-8 win over Fort Hays State and a 10-8 win over Upper Iowa. The Hornets used patience at the plate to earn the wins as they netted 28 free passes over the two games between walks and hit batsmen. ESU also put up 13 runs in the first inning between the two contests.
In game one against Fort Hays State the Hornets earned 19 free passes in the ball game as eight ESU hitters reached base after being hit by the pitch. ESU scored six runs in the seventh inning to go ahead for good as Andy Anderson and Brian Majors each had hits and drove in two runs in the inning. Kevin Wempe scored four runs going three for three on the day. Nick Carlson hit his second home run of the season and drove in three runs. Brock Nehls pitched the final 2.2 innings striking out three to earn the win for the Hornets.
In game two ESU scored ten runs in the first inning then staved off a Peacock comeback to preserve the 10-8 win. Richard Timbrook earned the win for the Hornets pitching 6.0 innings and striking out seven. Aaron Burris came on to work the Hornets out of a jam in the seventh to earn his first save of the season. Eric Shortell finished three for four on the day and scored two runs for the Hornets.
ESU is now 12-3 on the season and will take the next three days off before facing Truman at home on March 14. First pitch for the single-nine inning game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Notes:
The Hornet series with Truman was originally scheduled to be on the road in Kirksville, Mo. Due to a influx of snow and a wet field that series has been moved to Emporia.
