EMPORIA STATE HOLDS THIRD ANNUAL SENIOR PROM
April 3, 2009-The rain stopped and the skies cleared just in time for the Third Annual Senior Citizen Prom host by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee at Emporia State University. “A Dance for all Times” invited all area senior citizens to enjoy an evening of live music, dancing and socializing. Over 160 seniors were in attendance.
In addition to the seniors, 35 student-athletes were available to escort the guests, check coats, pin on flowers, take prom photos, socialize and dance. All of this was free of charge for the seniors. The student-athletes also spent most of the day decorating the ballroom to make the event special. Sixteen student-athletes also took some ballroom dancing lessons in preparation for the event.
Music was provided by the Tall Grass Big Band and the dance floor was always full.
“Live music was one of the improvements the senior prom committee wanted to make this year”, said Susan Riley, Emporia Senior Center Director.
The idea for the Senior Citizen Prom came about after two former student-athletes and John Rich; Faculty Athletic Representative attended a NCAA leadership conference. They returned to campus with an action plan to give back to the senior citizens of the emporia community.
“Seeing the excitement and joy that is really going on in there (ballroom)—all the fun the community is having--athletes and seniors together enjoying themselves," said former ESU track athlete and current assistant coach Cameron Babb. " That is what it is all about.”
“Our student-athletes look forward to this event all year long. We even had to turn away some athletes, to keep the ratio athletes down." Carmen Leeds, Student Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor said. " It has become an honor for our student-athletes to help with this event”
Contributors and sponsors of the events were in attendance and all have pledged their contributions for next year. Many thanks to the following: Holiday Resort, Charter Funerals, Horizon Plaza, Presbyterian Manor, Farm Bureau Financial Services, Robert’s Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Dave’s Pumping Service, Emporia Senior Center, Navrat’s Office Supply, Designs by Sharon, Emporia Floral, Riverside Gardens, The Sterling House, Scheller’s Landscaping and Sherry’s Dance Workshop.
