June 8, 2009-The Emporia State Athletic Department has ended another spectacular year on the courts and in the fields with another successful Golf Tournament and Auction. After the first review of the books, over $27,000 was raised from the combined auction on Friday night and the golf action on Saturday.
The team of Larry Ek, Marty Lippert, David Moe and Moe Schmidt won the first flight of the golf tournament with an adjusted score of 47.8 over the 18 holes. The foursome of Chris Alpers, Harv Haeker, Joel Phipps and Aaron Sewell shot an adjusted 54.28 to win the second flight.
Proceeds from the golf tournament and auction benefit the 15 individual sports programs and student-athletes at Emporia State. During the just completed 2008-09 school year, the Hornets had three MIAA regular season championship teams, one MIAA post season tournament championship team and placed in the top 20 nationally in six sports. The ESU baseball team highlighted the year with their appearance in the national championship game. Hornet student-athletes were named All-American 15 times in seven sports during 2008-09.
