June 22, 2008--With six of 15 sports programs finishing the season in the top 20, Emporia State University placed 35th in the final 2008-09 Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings with 379.50 points. It is the fifth straight year ESU has finished in the top 50 nationally out of nearly 300 NCAA Division II schools. The Director's Cup is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based athletics program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's.
The Hornet baseball team led the way with a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II World Series, with a 49-14 overall record. They were one of three MIAA Regular season champions for ESU. The ESU volleyball team went 34-4 on the season, winning their first MIAA championship and advancing to the regional championship match. The Lady Hornet basketball team won their sixth MIAA regular season title. The men’s indoor track and field team were second in the MIAA but placed 11 th nationally.
ESU was among five MIAA schools in the top 50 out of 291 active NCAA Division II member institutions. Ten MIAA schools (90.9%) were ranked in the top 100 nationally, the highest percentage of membership of the 22 NCAA Division II conferences. The MIAA joined the Great Lakes Intercollegiate (GLIAC) and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as the only conferences with at least ten schools to have all of their schools score points in the Director’s Cup.
In addition to the on field success, ESU will have 19 student-athletes named MIAA Scholar-Athletes with GPA’s of 3.50 and All-MIAA status while 128 Hornets will be named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll with a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Seven Hornet student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. ESU had a department wide GPA of 3.00 in the spring of 2008.
Emporia State student-athletes also help out in the Emporia community, donating over 2100 hours of their time in community engagement projects throughout the Flint Hills.
For the sixth straight year over 100,000 people attended home contests for Emporia State with the volleyball team ranked second and the Lady Hornet basketball team ranked fourth in the nation in average attendance.
The Learfield Sports Director's Cup honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's, in which all sports that the NCAA offers a championship and all student-athletes that compete in those sports, are treated equally. Institutions use the top-seven (7) sports for each gender in Division II. Points will automatically be awarded to an institution in the first seven sports per gender in which it scores. If an institution scores in more than seven sports per gender, points will be awarded for the seven sports which received the highest point total.
