June 16, 2008- Emporia State track and field athlete Damon Birk and softball outfielder Jessie Wiard have earned NCAA Division II Degree-Completion Awards. The Division II Degree-Completion Award program provides financial assistance to deserving student-athletes with completion of a first baccalaureate degree.
Birk earned All-MIAA honors in five events this year at the indoor and outdoor MIAA Championships. He placed fourth in the indoor shot and fifth in the weight throw, outdoor shot, and discus as a senior. He has a 3.00 GPA in physical education.
Wiard was an honorable mention All-MIAA pick all four years for the Hornets. She is the NCAA Division II career leader in sacrifice hits and set the ESU single season record for stolen bases in 2008 with 45 thefts. She maintains a 3.75 GPA in elementary education.
Candidates are student-athletes who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid. Recipients are selected on the basis of several factors, with emphasis on academic performance. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletics achievement, and involvement in campus and community activities.
Birk and Wiard are two of seven student-athletes from the MIAA selected for the Degree Completion Award.
