April 28, 2008-With wins on Sunday, the Emporia State baseball and softball teams each clinched MIAA Championships. It is just the third time in MIAA history the same school has won the league championship in baseball and softball in the same year. It is the second time in three years that ESU has accomplished the feat.
The Hornet baseball team clinched their title with a 10-8 win at Central Missouri that tied the MIAA record for conference wins in a season at 29. ESU holds a five game lead over UCM with only four games left for the Hornets.
The next action for the Hornet baseball team is a four game series with Washburn starting Friday at 5 p.m. at Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex. The series moves to Falley Field in Topeka on Saturday for a double header beginning at 2 p.m. and closes out back in Emporia on Sunday with a 12 noon first pitch. The MIAA Tournament will be played at Community-America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. on May 9-11. ESU will play its first round game at 6 p.m. on Friday May 9 against the #4 seed that is yet to be determined.
The ESU softball team swept Washburn to 4-2 and 11-3 to secure their unprecedented fourth straight MIAA championship. The regular season is over for softball and the Hornets won the league race by three games over Central Missouri.
