EMPORIA STATE 11th IN FINAL DIRECTOR’S CUP STANDINGS

June 11, 2008--On the strength of three top ten finishes, Emporia State University placed 11th in the final 2007-08 U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup standings with 568.50 points. It is the highest finish ever for Emporia State and the fourth straight year ESU has finished in the top 50 nationally out of nearly 300 NCAA Division II schools. The Director's Cup is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based athletics program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's.

“Our athletic programs continue to compete on a national level, which is the result of the efforts and dedication of our talented student-athletes and coaches,” said ESU Athletic Director Kent Weiser. “We are proud of every program's success on the field of competition, in the classroom and in the community."

ESU had top ten finishes in softball, women’s basketball and women’s outdoor track & field with a second place finish by the Hornet softball team highlighting the year. ESU also picked up top 20 finishes by the men’s indoor track & field, baseball, women’s tennis, volleyball and men’s outdoor track & field teams.

ESU was top ranked among six MIAA schools in the top 50 out of 281 active NCAA Division II member institutions. ESU was seven spots ahead of the next conference finisher, Central Missouri and 26 spots in front of the next Kansas D-II school, Washburn. The MIAA’s six schools in the top 50 ranked first among the 23 conferences in NCAA Division II. ESU was the top ranked NCAA school in Kansas in the final rankings for the third straight year.

In addition to the on field success, ESU had 24 student-athletes earn Academic All-MIAA status and had a department wide GPA of 3.03 in the spring of 2008. Two Hornets, women’s basketball player Michelle Stueve and baseball player Brian Majors were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans.

Emporia State student-athletes also help out in the Emporia community, donating nearly 2,000 hours of their time in community engagement projects throughout the Flint Hills. The ESU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee was named the MIAA’s 2008 winner of the Community Engagement Award of Excellence by the NCAA Division II and the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) for their senior prom “Take a Step Back in Time”.

For the fourth straight year over 100,000 people attended home contests for Emporia State. The Lady Hornet basketball team ranked second in the nation in average attendance while the men's team was 11th nationally.

“On behalf of the entire athletic department, I would like to thank the many fans and supporters of Hornet Athletics across the state of Kansas that helped us reach this point,” said Weiser. “It is your continued support that will help us maintain, and hopefully move up, in these standings over the coming years.”

The Director's Cup takes into account the top finishes on the national level by an institution's sports programs and is generally regarded as the industry standard for measuring overall athletics success by an institution.
