June 9, 2008-A total of 24 Emporia State student-athletes were honored by the conference for their success in the classroom and in the athletic arena. Six men and 18 women were named Academic All-MIAA for carrying a cumulative 3.50 grade-point average in two terms of attendance at the nominating institution, and earning All-MIAA honors in their sport over the past season.
The 24 student-athletes are the most in MIAA sponsored sports of any conference school and the second highest overall total. Truman’s total of 31 Academic All-MIAA honorees includes 11 student-athletes competing in sports not sponsored by the MIAA (six women’s swimmers, two women’s golfers, two men’s swimmers and a wrestler).
As a department, Hornet student-athletes had a 3.03 GPA during the spring of 2008 with the volleyball and softball teams sharing high honors with 3.37 team GPA’s. Both of those teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament with the volleyball team finishing 17 th in the nation and the softball team making it all the way to the national championship game. ESU also had two student-athletes named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in 2007-08 and have had 16 Academic All-Americans since 2000.
