University Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, April 5, 2006 – 2:00 pm
Kansas Business Hall of Fame (CH 205)

Present: Anthony Ambrosio, Stacey Braun, Daniel Kolb, Neal Luo, Marie Miller (Acting Chair), Dennis Pelsma, Christy Schreck, Bill Smith, and Derek Zelmer.

  1. Approval of Minutes:
Minutes from the March 8, 2006 meeting were distributed and approved.
  2. Peer Teaching Evaluation
Marie Miller shared a peer evaluation tool that is used in the Music Department. It is a general form that asks for narrative comments. Peer evaluation in the Music Department is done twice in the Fall for all full-time faculty; part-time faculty are evaluated twice in the spring. A discussion was held on development of a better way of evaluating teaching rather than the student evaluation form. It was suggested that research be done on this topic and resources placed on the Assessment web site.
  3. HLC Training
Dr. Ambrosio shared that the HLC Assessment training workshops were full. There is a possibility of HLC scheduling another one in the fall. Dr. Ambrosio shared a questionnaire that should be completed by those interested in attending. This will be discussed further at the next meeting.
  4. University Assessment Plan Summary (UAPS):
Dr. Ambrosio shared the assessment plan form, and a sample of the feedback he is providing to those departments/programs that have submitted forms. Assessment plans were received from 41 departments/ programs. He also discussed the general findings from the plans and will work on including training needs identified in future assessment forums. He asked for committee members to recommend areas/programs that would benefit from the HLC training, based upon his feedback of their assessment program. The committee felt that he would be a better judge of who should be involved in HLC training, and that he might contact chairs or deans to identify potential participants.
  5. Other:
    1. Book/Software Project
Dr. Ambrosio is going to San Francisco next week to speak with a publisher about a book on assessment, which will be written by various ESU LA&S faculty. Accompanying this book would be a software project that would facilitate assessment.

Next meeting date and time:
May 3, 2006, KBHF Conference Room, CH205 at 2:00 pm.

Meeting adjourned at 3:05 p.m.
