Faculty : Instructor : Dr. Susan NakaoDr. Susan Nakao joined the Emporia State University faculty as a full-time lecturerin Art and Art Education in 2004, after two years as a part-time lecturer for ESU. She teaches both traditional (on-campus) and online courses in art appreciation and art education. She is a member of the Life Long Learning 2+2 Program faculty for both Kansas City Kansas Community College and Butler County Community College. Dr. Nakao has a long-standing interest in the art and culture of Japan, having offered courses, professional presentations, and public presentations on a variety of related topics. Dr. Nakao earned the Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Art Education and Elementary Educational Leadership from the University of Missouri in Columbia and also holds an M.A. in Fine Crafts from Pittsburg State University with her major studio work in fibers, jewelry, and flat glass. Her publications include articles in Studies in Art Education, Art Education Journal, and School Arts. She has exhibited her artwork in regional and national exhibits and had two pieces selected for publication in "Soft Jewelry" by Nancy Koehler. Her work is in private collections throughout the midwest. She is an active member of the National Art Education Association, the Kansas Art Education Association, and a past president of the Kentucky Art Education Association. While a tenured Associate Professor of Art and Art Education at Northern Kentucky University, her interest in spirituality and character education led her to early retirement (1990). She accepted a staff position in a national service-oriented non-profit organization. During 12 years in that position, she developed a character education program for youth, ages 10-25. Through this work, she was invited to present her program at an international conferencwe for educators in Japan in 1994. Since returning in 2002 to her home state, Kansas, she has been actively involved in national and state conferences in both art education and online teaching. She is one of the faculty advisers for the Emporia State University Anime Obsession Organization.
