Program Philosophy
What is an engraving?
Does it serve merely as ornamentation? Is it a print? It is the goal of this program to expand the definition of engraving. Using hand fabricated objects, you will go beyond traditional engraving applications.
Early courses focus on becoming acclimated with the tools. After beginning courses have been completed, the primary focus is on conceptual development. It is this program's ambition to explore the conceptual as well as the technical side of engraving.
This program welcomes all disciplines in an effort to hybridize techniques. Installation, ceramics, bones, metal, assemblage, printmaking, sculpture, painting (and more) are all invited into the lab for exploration. You, the student, are the researcher and innovator, pushing and exploring where engraving will take you. You will be laying down the foundation for future ESU engravers.
No where else on the planet is there a program like this. Become one of the forefathers of the newest studio arts program in country.
