ESU Students and Alcohol

Alcohol Consumption and Partying Behaviors

ESU students who use alcohol:

  • Used alcohol an average of 5 days in the last month
  • Usually party an average of 4.9 hours per event
  • Usually average 1 drink per hour when partying
  • Have 8.5 drinks per week or less

Protective Alcohol Use Behaviors

ESU students have the ability to help keep themselves and others safe and healthy when they drink alcohol!

Most ESU students:

  • Choose to hang out with friends they know and trust
  • Choose to drink in places they know they will be safe
  • Usually drink on a full stomach
  • Have a designated driver (defined as a person who has not been drinking)
  • Limit the amount of money they bring or spend on alcohol
  • Choose not to drink from a shared source (punch bowl)

Non-Alcohol Fun

  • Approximately 24% of ESU students do not drink alcohol (spring 2005 survey, n=465)

ESU students :

  • Agree they can have fun without alcohol
  • Have gone to a party in the last thirty days that did not serve alcohol

Alcohol-Related Harm

Most ESU students do not experience harm due to their drinking!

Most students :

  • Have not dropped a class nor failed a class because of their drinking
  • Have not received a lower grade in a course because of their drinking
  • Have not been in trouble with police or trouble with school authorities because of their drinking
  • Have not gotten into a physical fight because of their drinking
  • Have not required medical attention as a result of their drinking
  • Did not have an unwanted sexual experience due to their drinking
  • Did not have sex with someone without using a condom due to their drinking
  • Have not damaged property due to their drinking
