Fall 2008 syllabus

Theatre Appreciation - Section B (52453)
King Hall 216 - 9-9:50 a.m. (MW)

The course will develop critical thinking, observation and communication skills as the students examine and discuss the elements of theatre. Classroom lectures, demonstrations and discussions are designed to give students a fuller understanding of creative expression and collaboration.

Course outcomes. Through this course each student should be able to...
...develop a greater appreciation of the history of the theatre.
...recognize major dramatic works by genre and author.
...discuss the collaboration between actors, designers and directors.
...express his or her critical evaluation of theatre in performance.

Production Requirement In addition to readings from our text, you are required to attend two ESU theatre productions. If you are unable to attend the plays, drop the class.

Grading Scale Grades will be based upon a 500 point scale. Plus and minus grades will be used. Percentages are as follows:
A (93-99) A- (90-92) B+ (88-89)
B (83-87) B- (80-82) C+ (78-79)
C (73-77) C- (70-72) D+ (68-69)
D (63-67) D- (60-62)
F (59 and below)

About attendanceAbsences affect your progress through the course. You will begin the semester with 50 attendance points. Each absence or tardy will lower your total by 5 points.

Course Policies • Assignments are due at the day they are assigned, at class time.
• Late assignments will not be graded, but they must be turned in.
• Handwritten work will not be accepted, unless otherwise specified.
• If you are late to class, it will be recorded as an absence.
• Early departures also count as an absence.
• School activities will not excuse you from class work.
• Most assignments may be transmitted electronically.

Faculty Initiated Withdrawl Procedure. If a student's absences from class or disruptive behavior become detrimental to the student's progress or that of the other students in the class, the faculty member shall attempt to contact the student in writing about withdrawing from the class and shall seek the aid of the office of the Vice President of Student Affairs to help insure contacting the student. The office of the Vice President of Student Affairs shall provide the student information about the existing appeals procedures. Upon receivinga written report from the faculty member, the Vice President of Student Affairs may initiate a student withdrawal from the class. None of the above implies or states that faculty members are required to initiate the student withdrawals for excessive absence.

Reaction Papers are 3-4 pages, word processed, and represent your reaction to a particular production. The first paper is worth 50 points. The second paper will be worth 100 points. If you receive an unsatisfactory mark, you may be asked to rewrite your paper.
• In your paper, answer Goethe's Three questions.
• Write. Rewrite. Proofread. Spelling, syntax and grammar count.
• Be specific. Cite clear examples.
• Write in the active voice.
• Use the past tense to describe the action of the play.
• Provide a context for the paper, either in the opening paragraph or in a heading. This heading should include the name of the play, where you saw it and when you saw it.
